GIF or MP4? What each social network accepts in 2026

Animated posts outperform stills, but each network handles motion differently.

Networks that play GIFs

• X: native GIF support. Keep files small (we target under 5 MB at 15 fps, max 800px wide).
• LinkedIn: GIFs play inline in the feed.

Networks that need MP4

• Instagram: Reels and feed video are MP4 only.
• Facebook Pages: upload MP4 for reliable autoplay.
• Threads, TikTok and YouTube Shorts: vertical MP4, 1080×1920.
